WASHINGTON -- The House Appropriations Committee voted to allow schools to request a waiver to delay complying with healthier school food standards. The rules set by Congress and the Obama administration require more fruits, vegetables and whole grains in the lunch line and set limits on sodium, sugar and fat.

The provision in an agriculture-spending bill approved by the committee would allow schools to opt out of the standards for the next school year if they are losing money on meal programs for a six-month period.

Some school nutrition directors have lobbied for the waiver, saying the rules have proved to be costly and restrictive.

The bill will now go to the House floor before being conferenced with the Senate version. The Senate did not include the opt-out language in its version.
