ONEONTA, NY -- The State University of New York at Oneonta is demonstrating the success of several firsts for Shop24 Global LLC's robotic convenience store.

The SUNY Oneonta Shop24, placed in January, is the first to be located inside a building on a college campus and the first to be placed next to a conventional convenience store that sells the same products. It's also the first automated store to be operated by Sodexo.

The giant vending machine dispenses homemade sushi (another first), which has reportedly become a top seller on campus. It also dispenses a variety of snacks, beverages, sandwiches, salads frozen meals, medicines and paper products. Shop24 measures over nine feet tall and offers up to 200 items ranging in weight from less than 1 oz. to 8 lbs.

"We are open to suggestions from students, faculty and staff about what they'd like to see in our Shop24," said Sodexo general manager Jimmy Hamm. "We seem to have a good blend of popular items, but we can certainly make enhancements."

To make a purchase, patrons select the items they desire from a computer screen, and the Shop24 robot selects the items and places them into a shopping basket. Up to seven items can be purchased in a single transaction. Shop24 accepts cash, credit and debit cards, along with SUNY Oneonta's "dragon dollars" and prepaid meal cards.

"Shop24 offers an extensive array of items for students on the run, and will certainly satisfy those late-night cravings," said Oneonta Auxiliary Services executive director Diane Williams. "It will also serve our campus community when classes are not in session, a time when our retail and resident dining operations are limited."
