HOUSTON -- State Rep. Carol Alvarado is trying once again to ban soda, sports drinks and other sweetened beverages in public schools. Her proposal would confine schools in Texas to selling or distributing only 100% vegetable or fruit juice, unsweetened water and 1% or skim milk.

The Houston Democrat introduced a similar bill last year, claiming it would help combat childhood obesity and save Texas the cost of treating resulting diseases like diabetes. It passed the House, but was defeated in the state Senate.

The bill's supporters argued that the ban on sugary drinks iss already in effect for Texas's elementary school students, and that it made no sense not to extend the same rules to the older grades. Lawmakers who challenged the legislation said older students have a right to make their own judgments when selecting drinks.
