NEW YORK CITY -- Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal is bringing his celebrity status to Blue04, which markets oxygenated water, as an owner.
The BlueO4 energy-boosting formula contains 41 minerals and electrolytes, along with extra oxygen that is absorbed into the body once it's consumed. The company claims that the product's boosted oxygen levels can help reduce headaches, stress, fatigue, jet lag, and altitude sickness and increase overall health and wellness. It's available in a 20-fl.oz. bottle and will soon be offered in 12-fl.oz., 16.9-fl.oz. and 1-liter sizes.
Blue04 began distributing the beverage line a year ago and it has reportedly gained traction among professional athletes and organizations, including NFL, USA Track and Field and the NBA. It is poised for widespread nationwide growth after securing recent distribution contracts in California and hotel chains in Florida.
Blue04 said O'Neal will be a big part of the company's expansion plans and is banking on his notoriety to help grow its water product. He has millions of social media followers, including 6.5 million on twitter, and is among the top 10 celebrity users. He's also regarded as a savvy businessman; a year after retiring from the NBA in 2011, he received a Ph.D. in Leadership and Education from Barry University (Miami Shores, FL).
Blue04's founder and chief executive is David Otunga, a lawyer, professional wrestler (WWE) and former reality television actor. Seven-time NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady is also a Blue04 owner.
"Everyone knows Shaquille's abilities, records and stats as one of the NBA's all-time greats," said Otung. "However, Shaquille's brand influence, business acumen, knowledge and sheer competitive nature has propelled his business career after the NBA to a level achieved by few."
