JACKSON, MS -- Mississippi is the next state to ban sweepstakes videogames. On Feb. 12, the Mississippi House passed a bill, HB 974, outlawing the Internet cafés where the online sweepstakes games are usually placed.

The measure was passed unanimously, but with one change suggested by Rep. John Read (R-Gautier), who offered what he called the "Chuck E. Cheese" amendment to ensure that the new antigambling law would not prevent kids from claiming winnings from amusement games.

"We don't want some children playing skee-ball, getting handcuffed and taken off," Read said. | SEE NEWSPAPER STORY

Mississippi House Gaming Chairman Richard Bennett (R-Long Beach) authored the bill banning electronic sweepstakes.

Internet sweepstakes games and parlors, which opponents claim exploit legal loopholes to simulate gambling, are under fire around the country. North Carolina upheld a ban on the games late last year and is shutting down the businesses that operate them. | SEE STORY
