Los Angeles County Reduces Rather Than Quadrupling Vending Health Permit Fee

LOS ANGELES -- Operators in Los Angeles County will pay lower fees for vending machine health permits rather than seeing them quadruple, thanks to a two-year effort by the California Automatic Vending Council and National Automatic Merchandising Association.

The county had originally proposed an increase in the annual fee from $62 to $275 per machine, based on the county's estimate of the time it would need to invest in inspecting the machines. These fees apply to cold food and coffee venders. In July 2011, the Los Angeles County Environmental Health Department agreed to freeze its existing fee following industry opposition to the proposed increase. | SEE STORY

Following two years of discussions with NAMA and CAVC, the health department recently announced that LAC code Section 8.04.720 has been amended and the annual fees will now be $62 per machine for the first three machines, and $23 for each additional machine that an operating company has in the field.

"This is a huge victory for NAMA and CAVC; instead of the fee increasing over 400% it will know be reduced significantly," NAMA said.

In a related development, NAMA said it is working with CAVC and the health department on establishing guidelines for micromarkets in Los Angeles County.
