WASHINGTON -- The Calories Count Vending Program that kicked off in municipal buildings in Chicago and San Antonio late last year will begin rolling out in city buildings in Washington, DC, next month.

Coca-Cola Co., Dr Pepper Snapple Group and PepsiCo will work with District of Columbia mayor Vincent Gray, foodservice providers and vending operators to increase availability of lower-calorie beverages in vending machines and to display a "Calories Count" snipe (POS signage) on machine fronts. The signage reminds consumers to consider calories in their beverage choices with such messages as "Check, then Choose" and "Try a Low-Calorie Beverage." Each selection button will display calorie counts per beverage container.

"I'm glad that the District will be in the vanguard of municipal governments working with our nation's beverage companies to ensure that our workers and visitors to our municipal facilities have the information they need to make the best choices for their lifestyles," Gray said. "This program is a great example of a public/private partnership that empowers consumers."
