FRANKFORT, KY -- State Rep. Steve Riggs (D) has introduced legislation in the Kentucky House to exempt food sold through vending machines from the state's retail sales tax.

The bill (HB 62) cites the declining sales and profit margins Kentucky vending operators face as a result of the economic downturn as the reason vended products should be exempt from the state's 6% sales tax.

The proposed legislation has been referred to the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee for review.
