Digital Foodie, self-service HELSINKI, Finland -- Finnish consumers can now shop for their groceries online and pick them up at a self-service site.

Called Collect & Go, the self-service pickup sites are being piloted by S Group, one of Finland's largest supermarket chains. The concept was developed by Digital Foodie as an extension to its online shopping program.

After placing an order on Foodie.fm, users can specify whether they want their groceries to be home-delivered or picked up from a Collect & Go store or self-service site. Users who opt for the new self-serve pickup option receive a text with a collection time and a code to open the locker. Lockers only open after the order has been paid for, using a proprietary chip-based, PIN-enabled card.

The lockers are insulated and their temperatures are monitored to ensure food safety. The new service costs €6,90 ($9.20) and groceries are stored in the locker for a maximum of two hours.

Finnish postal service Itella is providing the self-service lockers and related payment system for the pilot.

"Foodie.fm is already tailored to user's individual needs, and now we can offer more flexibility for the order fulfillment," explained Kalle Koutajoki, chief executive of Digital Foodie. "We believe that self-service Collect & Go could work internationally. It would be ideal for busy commuter sites where there isn't too much space to park near the collection point."
