NEW DELHI -- In its latest effort to promote condom distribution, India is placing vending machines in New Delhi's railroad stations. According to local news reports, HLL Lifecare, one of the world's largest manufacturers of contraceptives, has joined with Delhi Metro Rail Corp. to place 25 condom vending machines at 21 rail stations in the first phase of the rollout.

India remains at the forefront of promoting condom use as a way to prevent HIV and other STDs. Efforts have included a wide variety of public and private partnerships employing vending machines. According to past news reports, vending is viewed as a critical component in promoting condom use because it eliminates any embarrassment that may occur during a conventional retail purchase.
