Sega, Sonic air hockey table Sega Amusements has added a two-player air hockey table to its family of Sonic Arcade Sports games. The line now includes Sonic Basketball, novel Sonic Quad Air Hockey (a square table, played from all four sides), Sonic 4-Player Air Hockey (accommodates two players on each side) and the new two-player air hockey piece.

Sonic 2-Player Air Hockey measures 83" long x 46" wide x 33" high, and so is "right-sized" for the widest range of locations, Sega reported. The game incorporates the well-known Sonic character and logo in its graphic design package.

The new air hockey game features under-table and puck-release LED lighting, a durable scratch-resistant playfield, playfield edge sound effects, in-playfield scoring displays and operator-selectable puck sizes (large or small), to control puck speeds.

Sega's world-famous Sonic the Hedgehog mascot was created 22 years ago, and has become the world's best-known videogame character. The company reports that, at one point, Sonic had a higher "Q rating" -- a measurement of the familiarity and appeal of a brand, company, celebrity or television show -- than Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse.

"When Sonic first came on the scene, the parents of the children visiting today's locations were children themselves," said Sega general manager Peter Gustafson. "When they see Sonic displayed on our line of Arcade Sports games, they're re-connected to a fond memory which creates a higher perceived entertainment value. Because of this, they're much more likely to encourage their kids -- who also know and like Sonic -- to play a Sonic Arcade Sports game than any generic game, often playing right along with them."

According to Gustafson, air hockey and basketball are the two most fundamental arcade sports categories. "They offer intuitive gameplay, they're fun to compete on and they appeal to the widest demographic range," he said. "By adding our iconic Sonic brand to this essential category, we've created a can't-miss combination."

Serving markets around the world, Sega Amusements is a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan's Sega Corp. It is a leading developer of state-of-the-art interactive video, "photo-tainment," self-contained merchandisers, kiddie rides and redemption games. New Sonic 2-Player Air Hockey and the rest of the Sonic Arcade Sports line is available for immediate delivery from Sega's Illinois warehouse.
