SEATTLE, WA -- The Seattle City Council unanimously approved new rules requiring all vending machines operated on city property to be merchandised with at least 50% "healthier" and "healthiest" food and beverage selections.

Those standards are defined by Public Health-Seattle and Washington's King County, and have been required in all vending machines in city park facilities since 2010.

The guidelines list baby carrots, dried fruit, whole grain crackers and rice cakes as examples of the "healthiest" vending fare and qualify baked chips, fruit in light syrup and low-sodium nuts as being "healthier." The remaining half of vending machine selections can consist of regular chips, candy, pastries and sweetened drinks including tea, coffee, fruit drinks and sodas.

"We are working to do our part to support healthier choices for those who want them," said Mayor Mike McGinn.

Councilmember Richard Conlin, sponsor of the healthy vending machine legislation, said, "This is one way that we can support healthy and productive city employees."
