IOWA TOUCH PLAYS SET FOR MIDNIGHT SHUTDOWN; EMERGENCY APPEALS

DES MOINES, IA — More than 6,400 TouchPlay gaming devices are slated for a midnight shutdown unless fresh legal appeals – filed this morning – win a last-minute stay for operators. According to the Des Moines Register, operators are also expected to besiege state lawmakers with requests for legal help today. Yesterday, a district court judge refused to delay the shutdown.

NATIONAL DART ASSOCIATION TO BASK IN TV SPOTLIGHT

LAS VEGAS — A highly successful TV production company, Endemol, creators of Fear Factor, Big Brother and Extreme Home Makeover, is planning to shoot an hour or more of video at the National Dart Association’s 21st annual Team Dart championships, now underway here at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. NDA executive director Leslie Murphy says footage from the nine-day event could be used in a pilot episode for a proposed new Endemol TV series that would combine sports, travel and adventure.

NORTH CAROLINA HEATS UP POKER ENFORCEMENT AND INVESTIGATION

RALEIGH, NC — Federal, state and local law enforcement arrested seven people and seized more than 100 video pokers, five vehicles, and over $1 million in cash during weekend raids of several businesses. The raids come amidst ongoing investigations into poker industry contributions to state lawmakers, including House speaker Jim Black. Amusement-only video poker is legal in North Carolina, but police charge that payoffs routinely and grossly exceed the $10 limit.

MORE THAN 150 EIGHT-LINER PLAYERS CITED IN TEXAS RAIDS

SAN PATRICIO COUNTY, TX — The latest round of the years-long battle between Texas law enforcement and the eight-liner operating market occurred here on April 28. Dozens of state and local police executed a surprise raid, shutting down three game rooms. According to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, “More than 150 patrons were cited with a Class C misdemeanor and at least six owners and operators were arrested on suspicion of organized criminal activity.” The paper said officers seized over 200 machines. Officers reportedly conducted undercover investigations for more than a year before executing the raid.
