Could Financial Pinch During Holiday Season Impact Vendors Who Operate In Malls?

WASHINGTON -- Will the recent government shutdown keep consumers out of the malls this holiday shopping season? If so, then that could spell bad news for those bulk vending operators who rely on the profitable vending real estate during the busy shopping season to boost their P&L.

The National Retail Foundation had projected a 3.9% increase in spending this year, but that estimate arrived prior to the recent unpleasantness in the nation's capital. More recently, a Goldman Sachs report claimed that 40% of consumers plan to curb spending. And those with household income below $35,000 exhibited the largest percentage, with about 47% looking to cut back.

Surveys of business leaders, from online shopping site executives to big box store chiefs, paint a somewhat gloomy spending season. However, whether the anticipated doom and gloom will impact sales at shopping mall bulk venders remains to be seen.
