COLUMBUS, OH -- Shaffer Distributing Co. hosted in late May two well-attended Certified Championship Installer training programs, one at its headquarters here and the other in Shaffer's St. Louis, MO, branch.

"The turnout was terrific at both events, and participating operators from five states gained certification during the event," Shaffer reported.

Participants took part in daylong workshops that included an educational session on the formulation and manufacture of billiard fabrics and cushion rubber, as well as hands-on training in the installation of Championship's "performance" worsted and traditional woolen fabrics. The graduates received a complimentary installer's tool kit and a useful assortment of coin-op table parts.

Shaffer extended its thanks to Championship Billiards president Fred Cohen and vice-president Mike Serra, who developed the installers' school program for operators and gameroom owners, and to John Beecher of Beecher's Billiards (Millbrook, IL) for his valuable assistance in conducting the clinics.

Championship Billiards was established in 1963 as D&R Industries, a broad-spectrum supplier of parts and supplies for coin-operated amusement equipment. It launched the Championship line of pool table cloth in 1990, and responded to the industry's enthusiastic reception of the durable fabric by adding an array of billiard-specific products including bumper cushions made of a rubber compound formulated especially for the purpose. The company became Championship Billiards to reflect the new focus. It conducts Master Installer courses at its Elk Grove Village, IL. Information on the pool table technicians' program is available at its website, champbilliards.com.

Shaffer Distributing began as a very early coin machine operating company in 1929, and adopted its present name in 1962 to reflect its evolution into a regional distributor of music, amusement and vending equipment.

Maintenance to keep pool tables and other coin-op games in optimal playing condition is a key operator defense against location ownership of amusement equipment.
