Garment Maker Takes Experimental Bra Vender Out Of Service

TOKYO -- It seemed like a good idea at the time. When Japanese lingerie maker Wacoal began placing bra vending machines in it stores last fall, it garnered worldwide press coverage. | SEE STORY

But despite the publicity, the company recently said it decided to pull the machine from its flagship store for lack of sales. The vender, located at the company's Une Nana Cool specialty shop in Tokyo's Shibuya shopping district, was termed unsuccessful, and Wacoal said it has no plans to place any more machines.

Selling bras for about $30 apiece, the machine only made seven sales since its highly publicized installation. Although some labeled the unique vender a Wacoal publicity stunt, others saw genuine potential for it.
