PHOENIX -- Arizona lawmakers have introduced a bill that would impose nutritional standards for all food and beverages sold in high schools. The proposed legislation would require that the guidelines, at a minimum, meet federal standards for high schools and be established by July 1, 2014.

The proposed rules apply to vending machines, as well as a la carte lines in cafeterias, school stores and snack bars.

The bill (SB 1257) would require that new and renewed contracts for food and beverages limit the selection of iced teas, carbonated and isotonic beverages, and juice drinks that contain less than 50% fruit or vegetable juice to no more than 50% of the capacities of vending machines located on high school campuses, beginning July 15, 2014.

All other foods considered to be "of minimal nutritional value" by federal nutrition standards would be prohibited from being served or sold on high school campuses.

The new high school bill is sponsored by Democratic Sens. Ed Ableser, Frank Farley, Steve Gallardo, Kaite Hobbs, Robert Meza and Lynn Pancraz.

Arizona established similar nutrition standards for elementary and middle schools in 2006.
