FARMINGTON HILLS, MI -- On the heels of news that federal health authorities are investigating reports possibly linking 5-Hour Energy shots to deaths, Living Essentials LLC, the distributor of the highly caffeinated drinks, claims that it has discovered counterfeit products circulating in the marketplace.
The Farmington Hills, MI-based company said it has acted swiftly to identify and shut down the counterfeiters' factory. It has also filed suits in U.S. Federal District courts in both California and New York.
Living Essentials also said it has executed court orders that have allowed it to seize large quantities of counterfeit products from numerous locations and machinery used by the alleged counterfeiters to package the products.
The company said that no serious adverse events have been reported to date related to the counterfeit products.
Living Essentials said consumers can identify counterfeit products by examining the lot number located on the bottom of the bottle's packaging and on each bottle. The known counterfeit products are regular-strength berry (lot Nos. 112611A4, 105112W4 and W20712K6); extra-strength berry (lot Nos. 115811P3,W08912J4 and 119812P4); and regular-strength orange (lot Nos. 115111A2,105112R2 and 120012T2).
Separately, the Food and Drug Administration announced last week announced that it has received 92 reports over four years that cite illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths after consuming 5-Hour Energy shots and has launched an investigation. | SEE STORY
